What I Am Thankful for In New Cumberland

It's Thanksgiving again and time to reflect upon the things for which we are thankful.   Of course, I am thankful for family, friends, good health and more.  Besides these obvious choices, I've put together a list of things I am thankful for right here in New Cumberland.  These are listed in no particular order...

1. Community Volunteers,  These people do everything from firefighting to coaching kids sports to helping at the food pantry.  Without all these conscientious people helping, our town wouldn't  have a heart.

2. The new Hillside school.  It took longer than expected to be completed and the landscaping is not quite done yet, but this beautiful and modern facility is an asset to our town.

3.  Borough park.  It's been a soggy year and the park has seen many activities canceled or postponed.  However during normal years it is a fantastic venue for the Apple Festival, sporting events, picnics, play and exercise.

4. The New Cumberland Library.  Our library is one of the lynchpins of our community.  Not only does it offer books and resources, it provides several programs that enrich our resident's lives.

5. Churches.  I am not a church goer myself, but I recognize the importance of them.  All of our churches seem to be well attended.  Besides providing places for worship and socializing, they also offer valuable services and activities to many of our residents.

6. Business District.  Our business district is active and full.  From Nick's to The Bridge Street Coffee House and every one in between, our local businesses help keep our town alive.  In this day of big box stores and chain restaurants, we are lucky to have them.  New Cumberland is full of small and family owned businesses who provide great food, services and items for sale.  I know I gave them grief last week about having their Holiday Open House too early, but we are very fortunate that our businesses take the time to put together activities for the residents and visitors throughout the year.

7. Speaking of businesses, I am grateful for Dingeldein's cakes. The best cakes in the Harrisburg area.

8. Coakley's.  This local bar and restaurant draws people from all over the region.  I am fortunate that this establishment is within walking distance of my house.

9. Small, local government.  Isn't it nice to live in a small town where we know our public officials?  In large cities, such as Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, do you think people come across their mayor or council members at the grocery store or local restaurant?  Our public servants are approachable and are very dedicated to the betterment our town.

10.  Facebook and Blogger.  Yes, I know they aren't local, but without them, I wouldn't be able to communicate with my New Cumberland neighbors via the web in this manner.  It's nice to have a forum in which I can express my opinions on a local level.

11. You, the readers.  I was only going to make this list go to 10, but I don't want to neglect you.  All of you who have taken the time to look at my Facebook page and this blog page.  Thank you and spread the word.

What are you thankful for in New Cumberland?  Anything I missed, please leave a comment!
